10 Raffia & Glasscloth Furniture Favorites

Lately I've had my eye on raffia and grasscloth surfaced furniture as I makeover my bedroom decor. I love the nice texture raffia and grasscloth add to a space and I also enjoy the relaxed, coastal aesthetic of raffia. I'm currently looking to add raffia nightstands to my bedroom to add a bit of that resort, vacation vibe to my own space. I rounded up the best design inspiration featuring luxurious raffia furniture just to sell you on this awesome furniture option. I have also compiled my 10 must-have raffia furniture selections available for purchase right now.

Blake Raffia 3-drawer nightstand from Serena & Lily.

If you're wondering about the durability of this material. Raffia is actually quite resilient. Raffia fibers come from the Raffia palm tree and the material is used in all sorts of products from heavy-duty baskets, to furniture, twine and rope (and more!). When your furniture is covered in raffia there is generally several coats of lacquer applied first to protect the surface from stains and damage, all while the raffia still maintains its characteristic texture.

Meade Raffia Dresser with nailheads from Williams-Sonoma Home.

You can also find raffia furniture accented with nailheads or even richly-dyed raffia decor options. Another raffia trend that's coming back is simple raffia beds in all of their textured glory (see below). These classic beds can be found in antique form or newly designed from brands like Serena & Lily. Raffia-covered furniture is a fantastic way to move away from basic wood furniture throughout your entire house. In fact, the mixture of your current wood furniture with raffia-based decor will be a great blend of coastal meets modern design. Keep reading for my top selections for shopping raffia furniture for your own space!

Colorful Hand-Woven Furniture from 'A Rum Fellow' Design Studio

'A Rum Fellow' design studio project for a Soho Hotel, featuring their textiles on a custom headboard.

If you've been reading this blog for a while then you know that I love woven and embroidered accents, whether that's an amazing embroidered top or a truly unique piece of upholstered furniture showcasing a stunning woven design. A Rum Fellow design studio is crafting cutting edge woven and embroidered textile designs for furniture and home decor accessories, bringing contemporary energy to this traditional craft. I am loving their unique approach to upholstered furniture! Hand-weaving and embroidery is the key to making each piece of A Rum Fellow furniture feel truly special.

One of the best things about decorating with embroidered and hand-woven decor is that you can't go wrong whether you're selecting a bright and bold color palette or a more neutral palette. The textures in embroidered and woven designs pop regardless of the colors used, making even the most neutral embroidered designs shine. Check out this stunning neutral living room featuring a sofa upholstered in A Rum Fellow hand-woven textiles.

I also can't get enough of A Rum Fellow's unique headboard designs, each featuring a different textile from their studio. However, my absolute favorite piece from A Rum Fellow is this amazing multicolored armchair designed for a home in Provence. A Rum Fellow is quickly becoming one of my (many) new favorite brands!

Unique & Inspiring Furniture Design From Dubai's Khalid Shafar

Illusion Pearl Chair designed by Khalid Shafar.

Since the launch of this eponymous brand in 2010, Emirati designer Khalid Shafar has been focused on bringing a truly international flavor to an aesthetic born in UAE's desert nation. Quitting his corporate role in marketing and communications, Shafar followed his passion in design and has built a furniture and lighting décor line that presents his experiments with shapes, motifs and forms borrowed from his home country. While wood remains the predominant base for most of his designs, the signature pieces from his line include materials such as marble, textiles, metal and locally sourced leather. Traditional crafts from the region are expressed through his work in elements such as palm leaf weaving and reinterpretation of the egal, the black headband from men’s traditional Keffiyeh attire.

Octa Dress vanity set with vanity table, mirror, and stool by Khalid Shafar.

Among his furniture collections is the ‘Decohaus’ collection, inspired by the international design movements of Art Deco and Bauhaus of the 1920s. The collection reinterprets local materials, in this case camel leather, and combines it with the octagon shape found in Middle Eastern and Islamic designs. The range features items such as the ‘Octa Dress’, a vanity table designed on a modular system with side drawers handcrafted from leather.

2:4 Seats Collection by Khalid Shafar.

Another limited edition collection is ‘Puzzle’, which features three unique editions of handmade wool rugs woven in Afghanistan.

“These were designed by me and woven in collaboration with FBMI (Fatima Bint Mohamed Bin Zayed Initiative), a social initiative dedicated to provide women in Afghanistan with employment and to offer them and their families critical social services in healthcare and education,” explains Shafar.

The collection’s puzzle design is inspired by the patterns, which allow any two or all three rugs from the collection to come together and form a large piece. The collaboration with FBMI also involved contributions in design by the Afghani weavers who chose variations of the ‘mauri gul’ motif, which is typically woven by nomads in Afghanistan's western province of Herat.

Talli Collection of rugs & wall hangings by Khalid Shafar.

A new carpet collection created with FBMI will be launched by Shafar during the upcoming Dubai Design Week this October 2016. Looking ahead, he aims to continue his experiments with recreating signature patterns in three-dimensional forms. There are multiple collaborations with lighting installations and homeware designs on the horizon as well. “I would like to focus on my furniture line and working with multiple silhouettes and patterns. Early next year I am looking to launch a new collection, which has already been developed and is at the prototyping stage,” says Shafar.

This article was written by journalist Manika Dhama, featured here on Interiors by Jacquin in 2015. I am so glad Manika brought my attention to this world-class designer. Khalid Shafar's designs are quite impressive. My favorite designs from Shafar include his gorgeous 'Illusion Pearl Chair' and 'Octa Dress' vanity, both shown above. We look forward to seeing Shafar's new collection of rugs this October 2016, which will be launched during Dubai Design Week.

Contemporary Gold Brass Furniture from Jenifer Janniere

When Jenifer Janniere contacted me regarding her new furniture brand, I knew I had to feature her amazing designs. Jenifer's background is interior design but she has found a new passion in furniture design. Jenifer's bold, geometric designs blend the line between art deco and contemporary, adding a bit of edge and interest to any space. My favorite piece from her inaugural collection is the stunning geometric bookcase shown below.

Jenifer Janniere Etagere

Jenifer's design process is quite impressive and intricate, and fully directed by Jenifer herself. In terms of production, each piece is crafted in powder-coated 16 gauge steel that is treated with a hand-applied gold finish for a luxury feel. Jenifer also offers black and antique brass finishes for those wanting a slightly different look.

Want a peek at what Jenifer Janniere's designs look like in a residential space? Take a look at this lovely staging from store As Of Now, which currently carries Jenifer Janniere's line of contemporary furniture.

6 Chic Budget Coffee Tables + a life update!

If you're in the market for a new coffee table, but you don't want to spend a fortune, I have some fantastic selections for you! Before we get into these amazing coffee tables however, I want to give you a quick update on my life as of late. I'm excited to report that I've been selected as a new AOL Lifestyle Contributor! This means that you'll be able to find my blog features and editorials on the AOL website from time to time as the year goes on. Be sure to stop by the AOL Lifestyle Collective to see what's new!

I have one other exciting entrepreneur update to share with you, as well. I've just returned from New Orleans where I participated in the Collision Conference for tech-startups. I was there representing Legal Equalizer, Inc., a company that I co-founded with an amazing team of 3 other people, including my husband. It was such an amazing experience to be able to pitch our company to high level investors.

Legal Equalizer is a cell phone app that records police encounters, should you be in one, and notifies 3 of your loved ones with your geo location. This cell phone app also educates citizens on their legal rights. Available for FREE on iTunes and the GooglePlay Store.
It is so important in a world where police encounters can turn violent at times to have your own evidence in such a circumstance. This app is also great for families with teenagers who drive because it notifies parents if their child has been stopped by the police. We have received such wonderful support of our app so far! The Collision Conference even selected us as an "Alpha Startup", allowing us direct access to investors. It was so encouraging as an entrepreneur to see that my businesses are really growing! If you're a beginning entrepreneur, I want to encourage you to keep pushing because your hard work will really pay off. And if you're considering taking the leap to entrepreneurship, you should totally go for it! (For aspiring entrepreneurs, definitely email me if you're looking for any encouragement or guidance. I'd love to help!

Now on to the budget-conscious goodies I promised you! These coffee tables all look far more expensive than their price tags, which always puts a little pep in my step. ;-) I think you'll be excited by these finds, too. Take a look at these six unique coffee tables, all under $300. Which one is your favorite?

1. Mara Coffee Table - $299 - Article.
2. Bridgetown Coffee Table - $226.99 - All Modern
