Global Inspirations: Exploring the Culture and Beauty of Moroccan Rugs

 Moroccan culture has captivated our attention with their exquisite rugs, but many people don't know much about the origins of their striking designs. Moroccan rugs were introduced into mid-century modern interiors in the 1920's, however these vivid rugs date back to the Paleolithic Era where the native people of Morocco hand-crafted them as an intrinsic part of their survival. 

 Due to the harsh climates of North Africa, the Moroccan Berber tribes hand constructed the rugs to protect their families from either the frosty Atlas Mountains or the blazing Sahara Desert. Because of the different climates, tribes created various unique carpet styles. However, in most tribes the art of rug weaving was traditionally passed down from mother to daughter, and each design carried strong culturally symbolic meaning. 

 The intricate geometric patterns portrayed themes of fertility, spirituality, and male protection; they also depicted the extraordinary stories of its weaver. Moroccan rugs are valued for their one-of-a-kind designs. There are over 45 different types of Moroccan rugs, but we'll be looking at three popular styles today: the Beni Ourain, the Azilal style, and the Boucherouite.

Beni Ourain rugs come in neutral tones with dark geometric lines. These thick wool beauties can be incorporated into minimalist interiors, paired with bright furnishings, or intertwined with other lively prints. The options are endless!

  Azilal: Brilliantly Bold
Azilal rugs are known for their vibrant coloring and abstract patterns. The antique look of these textiles creates a beautiful contrast against modern interiors, and would also unite seamlessly with vintage decor.

Boucherouite rugs were woven from different scraps of materials by Berber women, which resulted in exquisitely unique works of art. No two of these colorful creations are the same, a quality that is highly sought-after!

Design Love: The Warren Platner Chair

You may have seen this modern and eye catching chair across the interior design world lately and that's because it's pretty amazing. This is one of those stunning designs that have stood the test of time, and remains a flawless addition to a space. The Platner Chair is the design work of architect, interior designer, and furniture designer Warren Platner who released this unique chair design in 1966. This chair works well in mid-century modern interiors, contemporary interiors, and any interiors with a fun, eclectic feel and that's why this chair is my eye-candy of the day.

An Eclectic Mid-Century Modern Home Tour



Jacquin: Thanks for sharing your colorful home tour today. Tell us a bit about yourself and your blog.

Tanya: Hi everyone! I’m Tanya, from Dans le Lakehouse, where I share DIY projects, craft ideas, room makeovers, and more. I started blogging shortly after my Handy Hubby and I bought our first home, a 1970s townhouse. We’re both pretty handy and creative, so we updated it on a really small budget, but we still made it feel like home. Two years ago we found our dream home, a modest bungalow on the shores of Lake Superior. We dove in head first, selling our townhouse and moving 1000 miles in the dead of winter. We have big plans for our new home, but we’re taking it slow and getting to know the house – and figuring out what we want – before making too many big investments. In the meantime, paint has been our ally and we’ve spruced up the house on an even tinier budget than we had before! We’re currently renovating our main bathroom, though, and that’s our first “real” upgrade in the house – I’m excited to see that project completed, especially because it involves a pair of gorgeous aqua sinks!




Jacquin: How would you describe your decorating style?

Tanya: I call my style “coastal mid-century”. I’ve always loved the clean lines of mid-century modern furniture and our initial townhouse was home to a lot of my thrifty, vintage finds. Since moving to the lake house, I’ve found myself favoring more “beachy,” “cottage-inspired” finishes, like back painted glass, pale grey wood stains, beadboard, and lots of cool blues and aqua. I’ve married the two styles to create a modern look, with touches of mid-century, some subtle beachy textures, and tons of aqua.




Jacquin: What is your favorite space in your home?  

I love the kitchen! It’s a temporary makeover while we save for and plot a major kitchen reno, so I decided to have fun! We painted the cabinets bright aqua, tore down the tiny, awkward cabinets, installed beadboard for a cottage feel, added more room for my vintage aqua Pyrex (!) with open shelving, and we even made solid maple counters. It’s a small, but cheery place to bake, cook, and entertain.



Jacquin: What has been your home's favorite craft or DIY project to-date? 

Tanya: That is a touch question! We’ve tackled a lot of projects, from big scale furniture pieces to small crafts. I love the Ikea cabinets we turned into a floating credenza and the framed agate art I made is still one of my favorites because it was so easy, but I think my absolute favorite project is the solid maple kitchen counters. Handy Hubby and his Dad built those from raw lumber and then I stained them white. The grain is gorgeous and I’m so proud of them!



Jacquin: What would a perfect day be like for you?

Tanya: A day on the lake! Since moving here, I’ve learned to live on “lake time” and get out on the water whenever it’s a calm, warm day – no waiting until housework is done or dinner’s made. Living here makes me live in the present, and I’m grateful for that. If we’re talking a perfect “winter” day, that would require finding a giant antique mall and strolling the aisles with a latte in hand – with fireside s’mores squeezed in somehow.

Chairish co. Shabby-Chic Challenge


I've been invited by Chairish, an online retailer for high-quality vintage furniture and decor, to participate in their Shabby-Chic Challenge.  Chairish even allows you to sell your vintage items through their website, which is fantastic. I was able to use any of the furniture and decor on their website to create a single e-design.  I must say that I saw many pieces that were very unique and special, which made this a pretty fun challenge!  

When it comes to shabby-chic, it's all about taking upcycled, vintage, and antique items and making them come together to create a chic and pleasant aesthetic.  The best thing about the shabby-chic decorating style, is that the look can really morph depending on your own personal style.  



Shabby-chic decorating tends to allow an individual's personal style and personality to shine through.  In fact, I think we can learn a lot about our style & preferences based on the type of pre-loved and antique furniture we select. When it comes to my style preferences for pre-loved & shabby-chic furniture, I must say it's all about originality and character.  Shopping at a place like Chairish is right up my ally because many of their furniture and decor items just simply cannot be found anywhere else.  So for me, I like to select the most original items, even with a few small dings because I believe this adds additional charm and character to a space.  

What you'll notice most about this shabby-chic challenge is that while I used primarily vintage pieces here, the room is far more chic than shabby.  This just goes to show you that shabby-chic doesn't have to be overly shabby, but can read more boho, rustic, ornate, or in my case today... a dose of mid-century modern!  Like what you see?  You can shop these Chairish finds below!
